The Dance Age (2016)

Get ready for a new "Dance Age!" The Muddy Basin Ramblers are pleased to present "The Dance Age," a five-song EP featuring two classic Taiwanese songs. With this EP, we celebrate a time when records spun at 78 revolutions per minute (RPM) and couples danced the foxtrot, Lindy Hop and the Charleston. "The Dance Age" was first recorded in 1932 by female singer Chun Chun, and written by composer Teng Yu-hsien (who wrote Wang Chun Feng 望春風) and lyricist Chen Chun-yu. The CD packaging riffs on both 78 and 45 RPM vinyl record sleeves, and was designed by Onion Design Associates, the team that created the look of our album "Formosa Medicine Show," which was nominated for a Grammy for best packaging design. The album also includes "Give Me a Little Kiss," (給我吻一下) a popular local adaption of an American country-western song from the 50s, several jug band and blues favorites, and a electronica remix version of the "Dance Age" to boot.

The Formosa Medicine Show (2013)

NOMINATED AT THE 57th GRAMMY AWARDS FOR BEST PACKAGING DESIGN!!!

The "Formosa Medicine Show" is a record about hucksters, vagabonds and itinerant musicians traveling throughout Asia, particularly Taiwan, from the early 1900s to the 1950s. In writing the music for the album, the Ramblers' bandleader, singer-songwriter David Chen, blends historical fiction with musical genres of the times, connecting the medicine show tradition in America with Taiwan's own. The result is a 23-song collection of quirky, heartfelt and humorous stories delivered by infectious melodies and grooves spanning a variety of musical styles, from blues, swing, ragtime and hillbilly to sea shanties, Okinawan folk and Jazz-Age Taiwanese pop.

David Chen and The Muddy Basin Ramblers (2007)

Our classic first album! "David Chen and The Muddy Basin Ramblers" is the culmination of countless beer-soaked nights spent by the Ramblers in the foothills and periphery of the Muddy Basin, where they honed their jug band craft and celebrated life on Ihla Formosa. This 17-track record contains jug band classics such as the Dixieland Jug Blowers' "Dancehall Shuffle" and the Memphis Jug Band's "KC Moan," as well as original tunes, such as the 1920s jazz ditty "Start Stomp" and an epic ode to a Taiwanese night market lady vendor, "Duck Roll." This party-on-a-disc is adored by blues dancers, swing dancers and beer drinkers, just to name a few, all around the world!
